The courageous hero Ataman Holovatyi stormed and took Berezan Island defended by the Turks. Impressed by the ataman’s valor, Prince Potemkin-Tavricheski awarded him for this feat the highest military decoration – the special personal Cross of St. George the Great Martyr. Deeply moved, the ataman pulled out his saber from the sheath and gave it to the supreme commander, showing that he can share the spoils of victory.

When the Turkish fortress Hac?bey (present-day Odesa) fell, Ukrainian Cossacks hid all Turkish weapons in catacombs. The entrance to catacombs was blocked with a stone slab that had an engraved image of yatagan on it. The treasure had not been found till present time: the yatagan still guards the riches.
